Why we cover the towns we cover — and not the ones we do not

We turn down work outside our area every week. The reason is the rota, and it is worth explaining.

Our contact address is 86 Digbeth, Birmingham, B5 6DY. We focus on areas where we can arrange reliable visits, rather than claiming to cover every town. That is not modesty about ambition; it is the constraint the whole service is built around.

The arithmetic of a visit

A half-hour call thirty-five minutes away is not a half-hour call. It is an hour and forty minutes of somebody's day, and every minute of the travel is a minute that cannot be given to the person at the other end. Stretch a rota over a wide enough area and one of two things gives: either visits get shorter, or they start running late — and once they run late in the morning they run late all day.

The families who feel that are the ones at the end of the round.

What that means in practice

  • We cover Birmingham, Yardley, Solihull and parts of the wider West Midlands where we can staff a proper team.
  • Every area on our website has been agreed by somebody who knows whether we can actually reach it.
  • When we are asked to work somewhere we cannot cover well, we say no and, where we can, point you to someone who can.

When we do add an area

We add carers first and clients second, not the other way round. It is slower, and it means occasionally telling somebody we would like to help and cannot yet. We would rather do that than take the work and send whoever is free.

If you are just outside

Ring and ask anyway. Boundaries on a website are always tidier than the real ones, and if you are a few streets past the edge it is worth a conversation.
